Unix Timestamps Explained: Why Computers Count Seconds

A Unix timestamp is the number of seconds elapsed since midnight UTC on January 1, 1970 (the "Unix epoch"). 1,800,000,000 corresponds to August 2027. Storing time as a single integer in UTC eliminates timezone ambiguity for the data layer — display logic converts to local time on demand. The Year 2038 Problem: 32-bit signed integer overflow happens at timestamp 2^31-1 (January 19, 2038). Modern systems use 64-bit integers (overflow ~292 billion years from now).
