Water Intake: Is 8 Glasses a Day Actually a Rule?
The "8 glasses" rule has no scientific basis. Real hydration needs depend on body size, climate, activity and diet.
The "8 glasses (64 oz)" rule is a 1945 myth — it actually came from a US Food and Nutrition Board recommendation that mentioned food (water-rich foods) provided most of those 64 oz. Modern guidelines from the National Academies: adult men need ~3.7 L (125 oz) of total water daily, women ~2.7 L (91 oz). Crucially, ~20-30% of that comes from food (fruits, vegetables, soups, even bread). So actual drinking water needs are ~80-90 oz for men, ~65-75 oz for women — and that includes coffee, tea, juice and milk (despite caffeine myths, normal coffee intake is net-hydrating).
