GPA Calculation: Weighted, Unweighted, and Why It Matters
Unweighted GPA tops out at 4.0. Weighted GPAs reward AP/IB courses. Colleges typically recalculate to their own scale.
Unweighted GPA: A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0. Average across all classes. Maximum is 4.0. Weighted GPA: adds 0.5 or 1.0 to AP, IB and honors courses. A student with all A's in honors classes might have a 4.5 weighted, 4.0 unweighted GPA. Colleges typically recalculate to their own scale — some use only core academic classes, some give different weights. Class rank matters too: a 3.8 in a competitive school may rank lower than a 3.6 in another. Our GPA Calculator handles weighted and unweighted; the Final Grade Calculator shows what you need on the last exam.
