Pomodoro Technique: 25/5 vs 50/10, Which Works Better?
The traditional 25-minute pomodoro is one option. Research suggests 52/17 or 90-minute ultradian rhythms work too.
The Pomodoro Technique (Francesco Cirillo, 1980s) uses 25-minute focused work blocks separated by 5-minute breaks. After 4 pomodoros, take a longer 20-30 minute break. The 25/5 ratio is arbitrary but effective for many people because it lowers the activation energy ("only 25 minutes of work" is easy to start). Alternative protocols: 52/17 ratio (from DeskTime productivity research on top performers), or 90-minute work blocks aligned with the ultradian rhythm (your body's natural ~90-min focus cycle). Best advice: test multiple ratios for 2 weeks each and measure your actual deep-work output. Our Pomodoro Timer supports all three variants.
